Greetings:

In the mid-90's, whole-school reform was taking place. To list just some of its elements, the plan emphasizes teacher collaboration, project based learning, a "less-is-more" curriculum, teacher as coach philosophy and student personalization. At the time, the structure of the 1963 building impacted the reform model. No wonder. The school of 1963 was not the school needed in 2000.

An example of where school design and instructional design were in conflict was when a class of 270 or even an "academy" of 90 students wanted to meet together to discuss lesson plans or integrated projects. The only places to meet were the gym, cafeteria or library. The library was the only real "teaching" space and it was booked. Smaller class project groups often met in a hall.

The 2003 PAC helped, but now with a 21st Century building with 21st Century teaching tools we soon will have a building that explicitly supports the school's instructional model. Congratulations to the design team. I am ecstatic seeing the library, radio, graphics and east entrance completed. The mission of Nathan Hale is to ensure that ALL students become honorable, thinking, skillful citizens. The Nathan Hale Foundation was founded to support this mission and its high expectations for every student. Please join me and our growing community as we say goodbye to the old building and celebrate the incredible newly completed learning spaces.

Stepping into the new construction for the first time was refreshing and heartening. Finally, our building, ambient with natural light, reflects the warm and welcoming sentiment our school so diligently maintains. The once dingy, decrepit and morose atmosphere of the old, dreary hallways has made way for the bright and beautiful architecture of our new facilities.
