Warm Up— What makes a good question for a scientific investigation?  Provide an example and explain.

 

Handouts: Lab Donation Form, Grading in Biology (tape in logbook!)—there will be a quiz!

Lab: Introduce “Spider World”

 

Homework:

·       Each pair/trio brings a clear container (approx 1 liter) with a lid. 

·       Spider Lab Journal Write—What do spiders need to survive?  You can do some research.  ½ page min.

·       Set up Logbook Assignment Log—first 10 pages

·       Lab Fee ($15) due on Friday 9/18

With partner—develop an investigatable question and make a list of materials you need

 

Lab #1: Collect materials for “Spider World”

and set up terrarium.  We will seal up on W/Th.

 

HW:

·       Bring in any additional materials for Spider World

·       Authors of Change Google Doc—due on Fri 9/18

·       Bring $15 course fee or signed form by Fri 9/18

·       Remember—Block Schedule on W (per 1, M, 3 and 5) and Th (2, M, 4 and 6)

WARM UP: After sealing Spider World, what changes do you think will occur within your ecosystem?  Explain.

 

Spider World: Finish set up and close lid.  Do “Day 1 Observations” AND labeled drawing with “What I See, What it Means” (at least 3)

Activity: What is Life?  (Examine specimens and determine if living or never living)

 

HW:

·       Lab Fee ($15) Due Sept. 18

·       Reading: Describing Life, pp. 121-127 

·       Make a Vocab Concept Map for the 6 characteristics of living things (divide terms with your Spider Partner)

WARM UP:  Which specimens from “What is Life?” were definitely living or once-living?  Never living?  Ambiguous?

Spider World: Day 2 observation and labeled drawing (3+ WIS/WIM).  Pay attention to changes and describe in logbook
